I've rented cars in Europe and Italy before, and the last time I went I got a great price from Avis. I would just check some of the major car rental companies websites, as not only will they have the most locations, the newest and best cars, but are probably the ';safest'; companies to rent cars from, especially from a foreign tourist's point of view. The last time I went to Italy, we didn't make any hotel reservations as we never knew where we were going to go next and really never had a problem, most cities have tourist offices that can help you with hotels, but if you do have a particular hotel or location in mind, it may be best to reserve ahead of time.
